Good luck on the surgery Matt and Mattias

So Matt Cooke and Mattias Ohlund are going to have the surgeries for their sports hernias tomorrow according to Ben Kuzma in his article.

Congratuations to the Vancouver Giants who've taken the Memorial Cup today! WOOT!!

Here are some cute Cabbie clips: OT food stuffs; Hockey greats; and Championship Rings (not NHL).

Some articles and other stuff Canucks related

I kinda figured that being a hockey player was kinda like being a teacher - smooth sailing after the school year/hockey season had ended. Well, perhaps to a degree but apparently they still have to maintain their workout regimen tailored by Roger Takahashi, the strength and conditioning coach. Here's the article on canucks.com.

Also, there continue to be speculation around Ohlund moving - an article by Gallagher. Well, hmm... There're reasons why players negotiate for no trade clauses. It'd have to take a lot of incentive or a really bad home/working environment to convince a player to waive a NTC. It's not impossible that Ohlie would move but it would just surprise me if he did. Where would he agree to move to though? What would be another good city to move to to play hockey? Dave Scatchard and Ed Jovanovski are in Phoenix, Jarkko Ruutu is in Pittsburgh, Brad May is in Anaheim, Bryan Allen is in Florida, Marek Malik is in New York, Sopel is back in Van..

Eros, the Ohlund dog, gets press coverage too

Geez, so who woulda thought. Eros, the nice little chocolate labrador of the Ohlund family is in the news. Again. There's an article about the first doggy hotel in North America and of course it had to have a celebrity gracing its doors:
Delilah, being a big dog, will sleep in a huge open room with her choice of several oversized chocolate pillows and a large flat-screen TV. Staff members sleep among the large pooches, on cots in the open space, and try to create a homey atmosphere. Before long, Delilah is chumming up to a beautiful chocolate lab named Eros who belongs to Vancouver Canuck Mattias Ohlund.

I took a look at the prices and hmm.. yeah, I don't think I make enough money to check my doggies there. =S

A foray into the WHL Memorial Cup: Vancouver Giants 4- Whalers 3

Wow. The Pacific Coliseum is so nice and small. (I always thought coliseum was spelled with 2 "L"s) It's been awhile since I've caught a Giants game or gone to the PNE so I'd forgotten what it was like. Damn, did we ever have close seats. The final goal in OT was right in front of us too. Sweet.

The Memorial Cup Giants towels were longer than the Canucks ones. The crowd was so not as into it and only really got going when they won. It was somewhat bizarre. Kinda felt bad for the drummer guy who had a hard time getting the crowd going. The mascot, Jack, looked so unenthusiastic too. Hard to look enthusiastic when your face looks permanently sleepy I guess. Regardless, there was record attendance!

Leaving.. on a jet plane?

Wow, it seems like we were blessed with 2 days of summer. I wonder when the rain is going to start up again. I'm guessing that the Ohlunds won't be hopping the plane right after the hockey season anymore since the kids are still going to be in school. School tends to wreck vacation plans that way. Haha! Which reminds me, I wonder how the Bertuzzi kid handling situation is. Tag and little Bertuzzi no name(s) are probably with mommy in Florida still, eh. Raising a family in pro sports is a challenge.

Everyone is still going through Canucks withdrawal. I still have my little playoff towel in the window at work. The lot of my friends who are Canucks fanatics had bought tickets for game 6. Since it never came to pass, they were pretty disappointed. Tickets for second round, though, were pretty damn high. In retrospect, I was still glad I went to game 7, albeit on my own. Man, the building was nutso. I've never felt so many people unified with so much goodwill in my life. It's kind of sad in a way that we can't bond and have that solidarity for world peace, elimination of hunger or something that would change the world - instead it's pro sports. Kinda shallow if you really think about it.

NHL Photos at Superstore anyone?

While I was putting together my little present for Mother's Day, I came across this at the online photolab at Superstore: NHL photos featuring YOU! I guess it's a bit low tech now, considering everyone's increased skills in photoshop, but it's still cute.. and legit. On the other hand, I wonder how popular these things really are. LOL!

Aside: John Mayer showing a Canucks shirt on youtube.

Aside: Another Mattias Ohlund picture.

Happy Mother's Day!

So now that there aren't any updates on Canucks hockey, we'll take a brief foray into Mothers' Day trivia! Hope you guys have done something to celebrate your mommies!
  • A woman becomes pregnant most easily at the age of eighteen or nineteen, with little real change until the mid twenties. There is then a slow decline to age thirty-five, a sharper decline to age forty-five and a very rapid decline as the women nears menopause.
  • Many of the sweaters worn by Mr. Rogers on the popular television show, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, were actually knitted by his real mother.

  • A mother giraffe often gives birth while standing, so the new born's first experience outside the womb is a 1.8-meter (6-foot) drop.

I just thought this was funny..

Chuckle.

EDIT: Well, I HAD thought that it was funny. The Flickr poster removed the picture. It WAS a picture of the Canucks Team photo photoshopped: background - bathroom stalls. foreground: Roberto in one of the stalls with no one else in the picture.

It's hard being a Canuck

The Canucks had locker cleanup day yesterday. They did not like having to pack up their stuff in front of the media. Mitchell said some nice things though - I won't link it because I hate the word podcast ugh. An article by Ben Kuzma on Naslund really just made me feel sorry for his situation. I guess that's why it's nice to be a player on an American team - less attention.

I've never envied famous people. I guess having lots of money is nice but in reality, people in the limelight are always just small potatoes. The people with real power and money are the ones that aren't in front of a camera.

Jarkko Ruutu video

This video gets me every time. LMAO!!! Now, I'm not a big fan of Tom but he's the one that really makes this video of Ruutu and Phaneuf hilarious.

Now that the Canucks are out of the playoffs, it's gonna be weird not having hockey.. Back to having a life again and being outdoors and stuff. In other hockey.. San Jose seems to be struggling. Right now they're down 4-1 against Detroit with 8 left in the 3rd.

Game 5: Double OT LOSS

waa! we're out!

I missed the last game of the season, confident that it wasn't going to be the last game of the season. Instead I watched Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood do improv live and by the sounds of the play of the Canucks last night, it was a heck of a better time for my blood pressure. I would have been screaming at the tv for sure.

sigh. how anti-climatic.

Well, Luongo, I had doubts about you in the off season but everyone was right, you are an incredible goalie!
"It's probably one of the games I felt my best in my career," Luongo said. "I felt [I deserved better], but what are you going to do? Obviously, I made a mistake there and it cost us the game.

"Right now, everything is surreal. Obviously, I'm disappointed because our season is over. I didn't feel like I deserved the season to be over. I wanted to keep going. I think it's going to hit harder when I wake up in the next day or two and I have nothing to do."

Game 4: Anaheim wins - series now 3:1

Weell, it looks like the Ducks aren't such lofty opponents after all. Coming into this series, they had seemed like such indefatiguable, looming, crushing players that we didn't have a chance, even if we were a rested group exiting round 1. It may be a combination of Anaheim relaxing their play and our stepping it up that we've looked quite capable of competing with them.

Yes, last night was disappointing, after losing a 2 goal lead. Now we have to win 3 games in a row. Ah well, that's playoff hockey for you!

Ohlund pouting..

Ohlie has been captured with a multitude of facial expressions but I must admit that this is this first pout I've ever seen from him. This is back from the Dallas series.

Oh yeah, I've noticed that the photographers are providing not quite so clear and crisp photographs to the press and to canucks.com (and some other nhl team sites). I suppose it's because of us fans who like to collect the fruits of their labour. Anyhow, no matter.

A Mattias Ohlund blog posting

Here's a blog posting I found that was Mattias Ohlund related.

A man came into my dad's office today. Roughly six feet tall, squinty eyes, of Swedish descent. They shared a conversation full of sticks and shots and favors granted in the past. A few of this man's friends were visiting from overseas and they were looking for some ice time. My dad found a free rink so they could skate around, etc. and they were most grateful. So grateful, in fact, that the man came back into my dad's office when they were done and gave him a new pair of hockey gloves that he wasn't going to use. My dad brought them into the kitchen tonight when he got home and had me try them on. Now the gloves are somewhere in the basement most likely still in the plastic bag they were transported in by the generous fellow from earlier today. The man in question?
Our very own Mattias Ohlund.

Aww.. everyone loves Mattias Ohlund! and why wouldn't we?
