Vancouver Captain Louie

So it'll be Captain Luongo and Alternate Mitchell, Ohlund and Kesler. I thoroughly support that decision and I hope none of the others are disappointed. Being Captain is a hell of a honour (read burden). Quote as to the reasoning behind why goalies cannot be on ice captains as excerpted from the MATTHEW SEKERES' article in the Globe and Mail:
The Canucks do not intend to challenge the so-called Durnan Rule, named for former Montreal Canadiens goaltender and captain Bill Durnan.

A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Durnan served as a full-privileged captain in 1947-48, meaning he was allowed to speak with officials.

Opponents accused him of frequently leaving his crease to argue calls at strategic moments and creating de facto timeouts for his team.

The rule, banning goaltender from wearing letters, was changed before the next season.

Now Louie is kicking around the idea of painting one on his mask. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Golf is to men as shoes are to women

No matter how ugly, short or fat you are, you can still golf.. or wear really sexy shoes. Preferably not at the same time.

Here's Mattias trying to ignore the photographer at the Jake Milford Invitational.
According to Greg Douglas' piece in the Vancouver Sun, Ohlund and Luongo both spoke at the event. Also in the article:
Ex-Canucks coach turned Hockey Night in Canada analyst Marc Crawford was among the Milford admirers. Since being fired by the Los Angeles Kings, Crawford and wife Helene have bought a house in North Vancouver and look forward to the coming hockey season where son Dylan is a hot junior goaltending prospect in Maple Ridge.

Evidence that Gen-Xers are taking over the reins of power

I learned this song in kindergarten.. I think. This version of the Discovery Channel Boom De Ya Da "Awesome World" commercial is slightly different to the one playing now but it's close enough.

2007-08 Swedish Detroit Red Wings

Found this in my miscellaneous searching of the interweb. I thought this was funny. Not the fact that Detroit would promote their high Swedish numbers.. but that IKEA sponsored it. Is there even an IKEA in the US? :| *Checks* Holy cow! There are 35 in the states with 2 more coming.. if I've counted right. Ok, then.

MacIntyre's audio interview with Ohlund

Talking about contract talks and the captaincy..

Mattias Ohlund interview

Ohlund still contract-less

Hmm.. well at least Gillis isn't putting his foot into his mouth when it comes to Mattias. From Iain MacIntyre's article on Ohlund in the Vancouver Sun from Sept 26:
Both he and Barry said they've had several conversations about Ohlund, although the agent said the sides haven't yet exchanged offers because they're still discussing the market to see if they can agree on comparables.

"We're trying to make it a good fit for every player here," Gillis said. "Clearly, he's an exceptional player on this team and we want to do our best to keep him here. When you have a player who has played as well as he has over the years and his experience, it's a great asset on any team to have a player like that. He's been a great contributor here and I don't see how that's going to change."
Nice words. Better than what he gave his previous client (Naslund), which was nothing. Hopefully Ohlund will get enough incentive to stay here to keep the team afloat.

Less Luongo hair products for little Luongo's diapers

From an Elliot tPap interview of Roberto Luongo:

Q. You've shorn your long, dark hair and returned with a steamlined look. Did you think about a crewcut like Mattias Ohlund's? Or the really clean shaven style of, say, a Pavol Demitra?

A. I just decided it was time for a change. It's been something I've been wanting to do for a while now, a few months or maybe even a year. The main reason was a lot less maintenance... a little less shampoo, a little less brushing, a little less hair spray. So we'll save a little bit of money on that to compensate for all the diapers.

J.P. Barry's only just begun

So J.P. Barry (Sedin's agent) also is having contract talk with Gillis this week for Mattias Ohlund. There's definitely less media on this talk than on the Sedin one. With one year left on Ohlie's contract, hopefully there'll be a successful ending to negotiations and we'll see Ohlund with a NTC contract in Vancouver again.

Perhaps a post on Ohlund?

The summer's been eventful for Mattias Ohlund. His public appearances have included the construction commencement for the MultiSport Centre of Excellence, the BC Lions practice at David Lam Park, and the Stanley Cup visit to Pitea for Tomas Holmstrom.

He's now back in Vancouver and big as a horse. No, scratch that. BIGGER.

Press on the press

I was looking through my mass of photos and found one of Iain MacIntyre, Bob Essensa and Dan Cloutier. Gosh, players, coaches and management come and go but MEDIA stay! Here's a blog posting from 2006 by Canadian_Kiddo as to his experience being behind the scenes as a media newbie at a Giants game.

Doesn't stuff like this just hammer into you that nothing is private?! NOTHING! Beware what you tell younguns - they may just post it on the internet and attach your name to it. yikes.

Hockey Season is upon us

Welcome back from the summer everyone!

STill looks like we'll be heading into the season without a skilled and competitive team. Sigh. I'll send out apologies to Luongo, the players, the soon to be named Captain, and even Vigneault for all of the flack that they'll get for not being able to win. *roll eyes*

Looks like marketing is heading the media off at the pass by announcing Trevor Linden news right off the bat. Who can stay mad at having NO TEAM when Trevor's nearby. We love you Trevor! Trevor Linden's #16 is heading to the rafters where it belongs!
